Once upon a time, in a small village by the sea in West Sumatra, lived a poor widow and her only son named Malin Kundang. They depended on the sea for their livelihood. Malin was a hardworking young boy who always helped his mother.
One day, a large merchant ship stopped near their village. Malin saw it as an opportunity to change his life. His mother was hesitant to let him go, fearing something bad might happen. But Malin convinced her, promising that he would return once he became successful. With a heavy heart, his mother allowed him to leave.
Years passed, and Malin worked hard until he became a wealthy and respected man. He married a beautiful woman from a noble family. One day, his ship anchored again at the village where he once lived. Malin’s mother, filled with joy, rushed to the harbor to greet her beloved son.
However, Malin felt ashamed of his poor mother. In front of his wife and crew, he denied knowing her. His mother was heartbroken and cried out to the heavens to punish him for his arrogance and disobedience. Suddenly, the sky turned dark, and a storm struck Malin’s ship. A powerful lightning bolt hit Malin, turning him into stone.
Until today, people believe that a rock formation near the coast of West Sumatra is the stone remains of Malin Kundang.
